ANTIQUE FRENCH OIL PAINTING AFTER JEAN-BAPTISTE GREUZE "L'ACCORDÉE DE VILLAGE"

$12,100.00 CAD
This exceptional 19th-century oil on canvas painting is a finely executed period copy after the celebrated masterwork L'Accordée de village (The Village Bride or The Marriage Contract), originally painted in 1761 by the renowned French artist Jean-Baptiste Greuze. The legendary original canvas resides in the permanent collection of the Louvre Museum in Paris. The painting captures a touching narrative of rural domestic virtue that captivated Enlightenment-era Europe. Set inside a rustic cottage interior, the composition illustrates a peasant father presenting a dowry to his future son-in-law while a notary records the marriage contract. The family is enveloped in shared emotion: a mother holds her daughter's hand in a bittersweet farewell, a younger sister leans tearfully onto her sibling's shoulder, and children look on with curious innocence. Greuze’s original composition was famously praised by the philosopher Denis Diderot for introducing "moral painting" - elevating the honest, simple lives of ordinary people into grand art. This 19th-century rendering showcases excellent narrative execution, capturing the original’s expressive facial dynamics, rich drapery, and soft, atmospheric lighting. This unsigned reproduction artwork is presented in a striking, heavily carved gilt and blackened wood frame. The frame features a bold, repeating scrolling wave motif that offers an impressive architectural profile and immediate decorative impact.
